Types of Mulch

There are two parent categories to mulch: organic and inorganic. What is in these categories of mulches determine the quality and effectiveness they have on your landscape.

What’s in Organic Mulch?

Organic mulches area made with materials that were once living. This includes straw, grass, wood chips, pine needles, compost, leaves and more.

Organic mulch is an excellent choice when it comes to choosing the type of mulch you’d like to use for your soil. Because it is organic, it provides nutrients to your soil, which in-turn helps feed your plants. It is important to get your mulch from a reliable source and know the origin of where it came from. We say this because mulch can contain weed seeds or chemicals, which is the last thing you want to spread around your garden or food producing plants.

What’s in Inorganic Mulch?

Inorganic mulches contain plastics, rubber chips, fabrics and geotextiles.

Inorganic mulches do not need to be replaced as frequently as its organic cousin. However, as these types of materials do start to decompose, it can be detrimental to your soil and the environment.

Benefits of Organic Mulch

There are a variety of benefits when it comes to organic mulch. It significantly reduces the number of weeds, allowing for a much cleaner look when it comes to your landscaping.

Similar to other organic foundations, such as wood chips, mulch also acts as a protective layer for soil. It protects plants, flowers, trees, and other vegetation from erosion and drastic temperature changes. This is very important for the cold winter months, especially here in Colorado.

In addition to its’ protective benefits, mulch also retains water. This is important during the hotter months because it allows your plants to better receive and retain.

Mulch also adds a lot of great nutrients to plants, trees, and other landscaping areas. Our mulch is for sale in bulk in Olathe, Colorado and will add a variety of important benefits and nutrients to your outdoor plants.

Why use mulch?

Mulch is primarily used in gardens or farms to retain moisture in soil and deter weeds. Mulch also helps keep your soil’s temperature cool in the hot season and helps prevent frost in the winter season. Not only that but, mulch also adds a well maintained, attractive look to any garden or landscape.

How to Use Mulch

Step 1: How Much Mulch

First determine the size of the area that needs mulch so you know how much mulch you will need. Use our calculator to help with the calculation!

Step 2: Prep the Area

Once you have your mulch, you must prepare the area before laying down the mulch. Make sure the area is clean of any dried leaves, sticks, weeds and other debris. Once the area is cleaned, water or wet it down and apply herbicide to help with prevent weeds from germinating.

Step 3: Add Your Mulch

Once the area is prepped, add mulch to the area in small piles and use your hands or a rake to spread it. Get as close to the base of your plants as possible.

Step 4: Measure Your Mulch

You should have a minimum of 3-4 inches of mulch. If you do not have enough mulch, weeds will push through and if you have too much mulch, it will prevent water from reaching your soil.

Step 5: Add Water

To help settle the new mulch into its new space, do a final watering. You don’t need to over-soak the mulch, but just enough to reach the soil will welcome it in.
